In this section, we'll have a look at some
backwards verbal expressions of children.
This is a six year old boy, having somewhat of a crying session. It turns out that
he was in this state for many hours during this day. If you listen closely, you will
hear his little sister adding her theatrical crying into the mix. I say theatrical,
because she was not even upset, just adding her voice into the mix for fun I
suppose. The girl really enjoys teasing people, especially her older brother.
What this boy is saying in the forward, is " I want my ball back ". The sister was
keeping it from him... just to tease him. Their father told me that this scene was
going on for hours that day. Personally, I think like with so many of us, we claim
that what is bothering us is one thing, when in actuality it could be something
totally different, we are just projecting our focus into something else. I don't think
the ball really mattered all that much to the boy. Right after he got it back, he
threw it too far, and it ended up in the next door neighbor's yard, and the boy
didn't even bother walking around the open ended fence to retrieve it !
I think what appears to be expressed backwards within the sounds of his speech
is a little surprising. Surprising in the sense that you would have a hard time
noticing that this expression would be on his mind, judging from the forward
dialog and present mood.

Here now is the boy's sister. This is from a different day, where her dad is kind
of talking to her in mild baby talk. The girl is about three and a half years old at
this point. Just before she breaks into what could be considered crying, she
produced this backwards statement.

These next two samples are of a couple young sisters. At the time of these
recordings, Matea was five years old, and her little sister was just under two
years old. They are at the dinner table with their mother. In this example, the
mother is intervening in Matea's attempt to add more butter to her food. Matea
speaks out, telling mom that she can't taste any butter, and wants more. Within
these sounds, listen for Sophie ( the younger girl ) to verbally form what appears
as non-word sounds. In this sound file, I have presented it as all the others, with
the exception of adding the " exact " audio that produced this backwards
expression, played at three speeds. Keep in mind, the forward seems like less
than words, yet the backwards may be intelligently addressing the issue at hand
in formed words.

Now we focus on the older sister, five year old Matea. Here Matea is asking
mom if they can go in the other room and watch a movie.. sweet mom says yes
to this ! Within these verbal sound frequencies, I do believe we get a closer look
at what Matea feels about her home and personal circumstances within this
home.
